A Story from Allama Iqbal’s Israr-e-Khudi (Secrets of the Self) , which explain a young man coming to Hazrat Ali Hajvari [Daata Ganj Bakhsh] of Lahore for advice, since he is surrounded and threatened by enemies. Farsi text with English Translation.
Story of a young man of Merv who came to the saint Ali Hajwiri and complained that he was oppressed by his enemies.
The saint of Hajwir [Ali Hajvairi] was even by revered by Pir-i-Sanjar (Khawaja Moeenudin Chishti)
Who visited his mausoleum as a pilgrim
He conquered the huge barriers of [Afghanistan and migrated to Hind]
And sowed the seed of Islam in India
The age of Hazrat Omar R.A. was revived by his piety
The Truth was manifested by his words
He was a guardian of the reverence of Quran
The house of lies fell at his once glance
The dust of the Punjab was revived by his breath
Our dawn was made beautiful by his sun
He was a lover of God, a messenger of Love
The secrets of Ishq emitted from his eyebrow
I will tell a story of this perfect guide
Which condenses an entire rose-garden in a single bud
A young man, tall like a cypress tree
Came from the town of Merv to Lahore
He went to see the respected saint [Ali Hajvairi R.A.]
Like darkness looking for Sun
“I am surrounded by foes” he said,
I am as a glass in the midst of stones
Teach me, O’ sage of bigs ranks
How to live my life within enemies?
The wise adviser, in whose nature
Love had combined beauty with grandeur
Replied: “You are ignorant of Life’s secret
Unaware of its end and its start
Be without fear of others
You are a sleeping force: Awake yourself!
When the stone thought itself to be fragile glass
It became glass and invites fate of breaking.
If the traveler thinks himself weak
He delivers his soul to the bandits to rob him.
How long will you consider yourself as water and clay?
Create from the clay of flaming Holy Mount Sinai
Why be angry with powerful men
Why complain of your enemies
I will declare you the truth, “Your enemy is your friend”
His being crowns you with success and glories
Whosoever knows the secrets of the the Self [Khudi]
Considers a strong enemy to be a blessing from God
To the seed of Man, the enemy is like a cloud bringing rain
He awakens its possibilities to grow
If your spirit is strong, the stones in your path become water
What destroys the torrent of the ups and downs of the road
The sword of resolution is sharpened by the stones in the way
And put to proof by moving back and forth
What is the use of eating and sleeping like animal
What is the use of existence, unless you have strength in yourself
When you make yourself strong with Self-Awareness
You can destroy your enemy at your pleasure
If you would pass away, become free of Self
If you would live, become full of Self (Khudi)
What is death? To become oblivious of your Self
Why imagine that it is the parting of soul and body?
Abide in Self, like Joseph [Hazrat Yousaf]
Advance from imprisonment [of slavery] to empire
Think of Self and be a man of Action
Be a man of God, have secrets within!
I will explain the crux by means of stories
I will open the bud by the power of my breath
“It’s better that a lover’s secret
Should be told by the lips of others” [last verses is borrowed from Mevlana’s Rumi’s Masanvi, Volume 1, Verse 136]
