Cheb Salih: Arabic singer from Tunisia
Cheb Salih (Arabic: الشاب صاليح) is a Tunisian chaâbi singer hailing from the city of Foussana. He stands as one of the pioneers of Gasba, a traditional form of Tunisian folk music.
Widely inspired by the legendary singer Ismaïl El Hattab, Cheb Salih seizes a folk musical style long abandoned. Indeed, during the 2000s, Cheb Salih succeeded in restoring this style to its success of anta, a style in which the traditional flute called gasba is harmoniously mixed with the percussion of the tblia/tabla.
This revival propels Cheb Salih to stardom in Tunisia and Algeria alike. In 2007, he records the captivating track “Khali Ya Khali,” which swiftly becomes a timeless classic on Tunisian airwaves and popular television channels such as Hannibal TV and TV7.
In 2008, Cheb Salih releases an album called Sidi Boumedyen, including the song Ayroni Bik, which became quite successful.
In 2010, he recorded an eponymous album, a sort of collection of folk and traditional musical poems, with in particular the songs Rahlou Bik or Jady El Ghezlane with the Moroccan singer Cheba Zanouba. On stage, Cheb Salih is accompanied by traditional players of gasba and a choir, to which folk dancers add up, thus shaking up the musical habits specific to this style.
